Reading Task Sheet

Year 3 Reading Response Autumn Term

This year we are putting an even greater emphasis on reading, therefore we are asking you to hear your child read at least 4 times a week. When you hear your child read, please record this in their yellow reading record.

In addition, below are a range of activities that we would like you to complete with your child. Please complete one a week. When you have completed an activity, please write the number of the activity in a circle, in the reading record and add a short comment.

1)      Together find 10 verbs in the book and ask your child to act them out.

2)      Together find 10 adjectives in the book and together improve them.

3)      Together find 10 verbs and choose an adverb to describe the verb (action) eg “ran” quickly

“sat” silently.

4)      Ask your child to draw a picture of where the story takes place.

5)      Together discuss an alternative ending and ask your child to write a short version of your new ending.

6)      Ask your child to draw the main character from the book, use the description to help you.

7)      Review a story your child enjoyed and ask them to explain why they would recommend it to others. Discuss your favourite parts and why.

8)      Ask your child to pick a character and describe him/her to you. Ask your child to say whether they would be friends with that person and why.

9)      In a non-fiction book, summarise in a few words what 5 different paragraphs are about.

10)   Make a list of the words you did not know and locate their meaning in a dictionary.

Remember make reading as enjoyable as possible. When you read together encourage each other to be very expressive and use voices if you can.

Ideally by the end of Year 3, we would like all children to be on either ‘Pink’ or ‘Red’ level. After ‘Red’ level they will be deemed to be a FREE reader and will be able to choose any book from the library or home to read.

Thank you for supporting your child,

Mrs Dench, Miss Ferry, Mrs Withers and Miss Taylor
